Makeup 104.2: Foundation Recommendations for Beginners

foundation recommendations

Now that you know what to consider before buying your first foundation, it’s time to give you my foundation recommendations for beginners. I’ve tried each of them and they all have a great shade range for you to choose from. Before you buy your first bottle, get 3-4 samples. This is also good way to test if you have a reaction to the formula before investing in a bottle.

Sephora and department stores like Nordstrom can give samples of foundation. Places like Ulta and most drugstores don’t give out samples so your best bet will be to go into the store. Swatch 3-4 shades along your jaw and then go outside to get an accurate shade in natural light. If that’s not possible either, just try to match your shade as best as you can.

In order from least to most expensive, here we go.

Maybelline Fit Me

Price: ranges from $5.34 – 7.99

Number of shades: 40 matte + poreless, 24 dewy + smooth

Undertones available: 3 (neutral, pink, golden)

Finishes available: matte, dewy

Coverage: medium to full; can be sheered out

My shade: 355 Coconut with a pump of blue foundation pigment to neutralize it

Where to buy it: Ulta, Target, Walmart, and Walgreens

Add’l things to know: This foundation doesn’t include a pump. You’ll need to pour this out onto the back of your clean hand or a flat, no porous surface like this. Be sure to use a hydrating primer if using the M&P one since it really does look matte.

My shade: 510 Hazelnut with a pump of blue foundation pigment (to neutralize it) but I may try out 505 Toffee to see if that works better

Where to buy it: Ulta, Target, Walmart, Walgreens

Add’l things to know: Alcohol is one of the first ingredients and the smell is can be off-putting if you are sensitive to smells.

Price: $35

Number of shades: 50

Undertones available: 4 (olive, neutral, warm, cool)

Finishes available: Soft Matte, Hydrating

Coverage: medium to full

Shade I wear: 385

Add’l things to know: Soft Matte is best for oily skin and Hydrating is best for normal or dry skin. With Soft Matte you have to use a hydrating primer underneath since it can be very drying. Also the Soft Matte can dry down to a darker color than what’s shown in the bottle so get samples in at least 2 shades of this before buying the bottle.

Application tips

  • Liquid formula: You only need 1-2 pumps or a nickel-sized amount for your whole face, with focus on the cheeks first. Use whatever is left on the brush to blend out your forehead and nose.
  • Stick formula: Apply 3-4 swipes on each cheek and 1 across the forehead. Then without adding more product blend it out across your nose so that it looks even.
  • Powder formula: Use the sponge applicator that comes with it to apply it to your face and then blend it out with a foundation brush.
  • Whatever formula you choose be sure to bring it down to your neck a little so there’s a seamless transition from your face.
  • If you find that you’re in-between 2 shades, go for the one that’s a little darker. You can always lighten up the center of your face with concealer later.

I have personally tried all of the above foundations and have purchased a few of them more than once. There are plenty of others out there to choose from but if you start with one of these you’re in good shape. This is one of the makeup products I don’t mind paying a little more for especially if the color match is spot on. Unless you’re heavy handed with application, one bottle of the liquid should last 3-4 months so the cost evens out. Let me know which one you choose!
